W. H. Shipman, Limited, has been involved in agriculture since its very beginning. In the early days the main focus was ranching. The sugar industry came to the Keaau area in 1899, and Shipman's land became home to Puna Sugar Company. In addition to several thousand acres of sugar cane, Puna Sugar had their base facilities and mill in Keaau.

Due to the rocky soil in Keaau, Puna Sugar closed its doors in 1984. Agriculture activities in Keaau diversified rapidly as many displaced sugar workers and others began various farming operations here. The emphasis shifted from corporate mono-culture farming to a collection of independent farms growing a wide variety of crops.

Today, W. H. Shipman, Limited, has over 4,850 acres of land leased out to nearly 100 farmers, and the agriculture economy is stronger than ever. The uses of our agriculture lands are shown above.
